From Bible Overview by Steve Levy:
God has one thing He wants to say to the believer: ‘I will be your God and you shall be my people’ (See Gen.12:7, Exod. 6:7, Ezek 36:28, 2 Cor. 6:16-18, Rev. 21:2-3).
God invented marriage to reveal the intimacy He wants with His people through the covenant. Imagine the happiest marriage you know. A couple who belong together and love each other’s company — a marriage where the home is a place of peace and happiness. This is how the Bible describes the relationship between God and His people. The Lord is the believer’s husband (Jer. 3:14). The marriage is a covenant of peace (Ezek. 36:26, Hosea 14:4).
We should never think that God merely tolerates us. Because He has made an agreement, if we believe on Jesus, He delights in us and sets His affection on us (Deut. 10:15). And we in turn are to delight in our God (Isa. 58:2, 14).
